She pointed at the trash can. "Right there would be fine.” (Nora)
Hush, hush –Becca Fitzpatrick
This quote just made me laugh. Even though at this point I didn’t know exactly what kind of person Nora was, I just didn’t expect it because, if I remember correctly, she was in hospital after nearly being killed. I won’t tell you anymore in case you haven’t read it.
2. “I wish I was away in Ingo,
far across the briny sea
sailing over deepest waters
where neither care nor worry trouble me”
Ingo – Helen Dunmore
Well I was about twelve when I read this book but years on I can still never forget this little song that kept showing up in the book. Although I did have to check lyrics because they got a little jumbled up.
3. “Well?” my mother asked me once I hung up.
“I’m supposed to take him to his club on Saturday and play bridge with him”
My mother put’s her hands on my shoulders, looked at me straight in the eye, and gave me her best motherly advice.
“Don’t screw it up, Alton.”
The Cardturner – Louis Sachar
It’s hilarious how money crazed Alton’s family is, especially his mother who is probably the most selfish of them all. Getting your son to play bridge with his elderly great uncle to better your chance of getting into his will… not so nice.
4. "So, here’s what you do. You win, you go home. She can’t turn you down then, eh?" says Caesar encouragingly.
"I don’t think it’s going to work out. Winning...won’t help in my case," says Peeta.
"Why ever not?" says Caesar, mystified.
Peeta blushes beet red and stammers out. "Because...because...she came here with me.”
The Hunger Games – Suzanne Collins
I didn’t know what to think when I read this. I was surprised even though I expected it and then I didn’t know if he said it two play into to the ‘star crossed lovers’ thing or if he really meant it. Of course I was hoping for the latter.
5. “You love me. Real or not real?"
I tell him, "Real.” (Katniss and Peeta)
Mockingjay – Suzanne Collins
I know, I know, another one. But I had to put it in here because this is possibly the sweetest thing I’ve ever read, in context of course. It’s so simple and yet I feel it’s much more effective than the usual ‘I’ll love you until the end of time’ stuff that you normally read. I’m not normally a mushy person but this made me smile.
